I went to Best Buy today with my owners manual and tried to have them show me the correct memory to get. The guy told me this type of memory is an old style called "SD memory" and they didnt carry anything close to it and that I'd have to buy it from Yamaha. I'm guessing this guy didnt know what hes talking about so can anyone tell me where to buy the right stuff at? Thanks.

Honestly your best option would be to buy it directly from here. That way you know for sure it is certified and compatible. This is where I got mine and received it withing a week. There is a 1GB version of the DIMM but I would stay with what Yamaha states is spec on the DTXIII module, which is 512k max. I have heard that some people have installed the 1GB and it works but I have not seen much disscusion on its performance. Good luck.

Below is the link for the certified 512k DIMM, comes in two 256k sticks.

SD memory also known as DIMM is the old standard for computer memory, these are what you would have used in something like a older Athlon or Pentium 2/3/4, they normally were rated in mhz, PC100 memory ran at 100 mhz while PC133 ran at 133 mhz.
For the DTXtreme III either speed will work, the more important thing is keeping the DIMM at less that 16 chips per DIMM, and having a matched set (manufactured in the same fab in the same batch prefferably). I use Kingston model KVR133X64C3/256 both my DIMM are fab'ed in China, both are PC133 speed wise and both are 256 megs or ram thus 512 megs installed in the module.
I'm pretty sure these can be purchased online but the problem with online is you may not get a matched set unless you ask and specify that both DIMM have to be identical, as mentioned, if purchased from this site or a Yamaha dealer, the set should be perfectly matched and will work.
If you put the wrong DIMM memory in the module, the module may act unpredictably or not boot up at all, things we learned when the DTXtreme III was first released.
Take care

Thanks for the help guys. One last dumb question...when they sell it, do most sell just one memory or are they sold in pairs?

That's for a single DIMM, you need 2 of those.
When ordering, specify you need 2 from the same batch, same place of manufacture (China, Taiwan, USA, etc). They also have to have 8 chips on them not 16.
Take care

Is this just the best place to get these? Anything on ebay? is that really how much the old memory is going to cost?

I personally purchased two sticks of the DIMM memory directly from here. Check posted link. Im sure you can look around and get this memory many other places but It is certified and you know your getting the right DIMM from the start by purchasing it here. I just didnt want to gamble saving a few bucks and buying it somewhere else and it not work. Not to mention its just a click away on the page and your done. Im pretty sure the "old" memory you speak of will still work in the new DTX900/950 module. they are pretty much the same thing. I wouldnt think they would make a price drop on the DIMM. It took longer to take off and put back on the back plate (joke attempt) then it did to install the DIMM. I was up and runing in less than 1 minute!

Good Luck!

These are old memory chips by today's standards -- they were the norm in Mac desktops a number of years ago. I did manage to find some used ones at a local computer shop here in Vancouver. They literally had boxes of old chips and were asking only $10 each (cash deal).

They work great!!!

$20 for 512MB seems pretty reasonable to me :-)
